Default ألف after و

Salaam to all,

Why is there an ألف after و in some verbs like خَرَجُوْا?

With regards to الفِعْلُ المَاضِي (past tense verb), this alif is written when the verb is used in the form of plrual masucline, such as in your example: خَرَجُوا

Here is another example:
ذَهَبُوا

This alif is not pronounced

I believe the reason it is written, is to prevent mistaking the و
in خَرَجُوا with the و that is used to mean "and"
