Default Hasten to these, also by the Shaykh

Many students ask 'What to read after the Madinah Books?' I found the following reply to this question in a forum called lisanularab. The writer's nom de plume is Akramullughat.

DearAssalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu

The respected Shaykh and professor Dr V Abdur Rahim - hafiZahullaahu ta"aalaa - has written more new and beneficial material in the English language, to strengthen, bolster and root-in, the skills and knowledge acquired from his Madinah Arabic course. Some of his recent publications include the following:

1. "From Esfahan to Madinah in Search of Truth - Salman al-Farisi's Hadith" by Dr V Abdur Rahim.

(Quoting from the Foreword"Salman al-Farisi of Esfahan in Iran (May Allah be pleased with him) left his home, and forsook his kith and kin in search of truth, and travelled far and wide for its sake. His journey ultimately ended in Madinah where he met the Prophet , Sallallaahu "alayhi wa sallam, and became his sahaabi. The vivid account of his eventful life which is both interesting and instructive, makes an excellent reading for the non-native students of the Arabic language. Those who have completed the Madinah Arabic Course can easily follow this hadith."

"Three useful aids have been added to help the reader fully comprehend the text. These are:

a) A complete translation of the hadith which has been placed facing the Arabic text.

b) Copious lexical and grammatical notes.

c) Multifarious exercises." (End quote).

After finishing the Madinah Arabic course, I read this book, and found it gathered a whole host of rules and principles acquired from the Madinah Arabic course, in an inspiring and beautiful hadith story. And the copious lexical and grammatical notes which the Shaykh provides, make comprehending the story, easy and comfortable mashaa Allaah.

[Published in 2006 CE, by 'Goodword Books', India. Can be purchased from the on-line bookstore at www.goodwordbooks.com]

2. "A Glossary of Words Used in Durus al-Lughah al-Arabiyyah li ghair al-natiqina biha: Arabic-English Dictionary" By Dr V Abdur Rahim

(Quoting from the Foreword): (After the khutbatu l-Haajah): "This is an Arabic-English glossary of words used in my book Durus al-Lughah al-Arabiyyah ...The need for such a glossary has long been felt as it is wellnigh impossible for students of Arabic in the early stages of their learning to use standard Arabic dictionaries where they are sure to get lost in the maze of innumerable derivatives of each word and their meanings. Readers must realise that this is a dictionary with limited scope: only those meanings of a word have been listed here which it has in the book." (End quote)

I was using this Dictionary alongside my study of Madinah Book 3 and it comfortably allowed me to dispense with using any other dictionary, until I completed the course bi-idhnillaah. Although the Shaykh describes it as a "Glossary of Words..." I found it to double-up as an excellent revision guide to the entire Madinah course. This is because it is not only an exhaustive glossary of all the vocabulary used in the Madinah Arabic course books, but also a glossary of all the Arabic grammar terms, phrases and grammatical expressions used in the entire course.

[Published in July 2006 CE by 'The Islamic Foundation Trust', India. Can be purchased from the on-line, non-profit, bookstore at www.lqtoronto.com ]

[Note: 'lqtoronto' is 'The Institute of the Language of the Glorious Qur'an', based in Toronto, Canada where the Brothers are in contact with Dr V. Abdur Rahim].

3. "Selections From The Glorious Qur'an - With Lexical and Grammatical Notes - A Companion to Durus al-Lughah al-Arabiyyah" By Dr V Abdur Rahim

(Quoting from the Foreword (After the khutbah al-Haajah "The need for a book containing selections from the Glorious Qur'an with explanations in English, and within the framework of my book Duruus al-Lughah al-'Arabiyyah li-Ghayr al-Naatiqiin Bihaa has long been felt. I hope this book will meet this need. It contains eight selections taken from different parts of the Qur'an and have been selected mostly on linguistic basis."

"I earnestly hope that this book will help the students of Arabic to learn some of the linguistic elements of Arabic needed to fully comprehend the style and language of the Glorious Qur'an, and prepare them for their future study of the entire Book of Allah." (End quote)

This book is accompanied with a Qur'anic C.D., and is the very latest publication written by the Shaykh - hafiZahullaah - who now takes the student who has completed the Madinah Arabic course, into the Gardens of the Glorious Qur'aan. This book - like the Shaykh's other books mentioned above - again not only revises the knowledge and skills of the student of the Madinah course, but teaches him/her new and finer points of Arabic grammar that are essential for comprehending the eloquence of the Noble Qur'aan.

I found studying this book, along with the copious lexical and grammatical notes and explanations provided, the multifarious Exercises, and the "Additional Notes" at the end of each chapter - which explores selected grammatical points and Qur'anic material even further - to be a highly satisfying experience, mashaa Allaah.

[Published July 2008 CE, by 'The Islamic Foundation Trust', India. Can be purchased from the on-line, non-profit, bookstore at www.lqtoronto.com ]

As the readers can see, Shaykh, Dr V Abdur Rahim is continuing to show us - the students of the Madinah Arabic course - great care and concern in the steps we are taking, during and after we have completed his course, by providing us with more and extensive material on Arabic grammar in the English language, giving us the opportunity to deepen our experience in the Gardens of "'iraab, and to move to relax in the Gardens of the Glorious Qur'aan - bi-idnhillaah.

We ask Allaah the Most High, to preserve and bless the Shaykh and to increase him and us in good, aamiin.

Hope this will prove helpful in shaa Allaah.
Wassalaamu "alaikum wa rahmatullaah.

Default An Outstanding Scholar - Dr. V. Abdur Rahim.

Assalaamu 'alaikum

The Authentic Sunnah instructs us to - not only seek knowledge, - but also to pay attention to the matter of whom we learn the knowledge from.

It exhorts us to stick closely to the Scholars of Islaam - those firmly grounded in knowledge.

The Scholars of Islaam are the 'mountains' of knowledge. They have established the correct belief, speech and actions in their own selves, and strive to establish it amongst the believers and mankind.

Adhering to this principle becomes more valued when we remember how important it is for us to obtain - not just an understanding of the Qur'aan and Sunnah - but the correct and certain one.

The correct understanding is only one. It reflects no deviation from the truth, no confusion, no misunderstanding, no error . It harmonises with the understanding of our Prophet hhimself - sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallaam- and the understanding which he conveyed to his Noble Companions - raDiallaahu 'anhum.

Knowing this, I am introducing the users of this forum to the more up-to-date scholarly profile of the Shaykh Dr. V. Abdur Rahim, whom the students of Arabic - especially the non-Arabic speakers - are honoured to learn from.

It is an honour because it is a rarity to have a Scholar of Arabic who can teach us lughatu l-Qur'aan by the language we speak and understand ourselves - until we attain proficiency in Arabic.

The following brief profile should interest every student of Arabic, teacher, parent, child, researcher etc who wishes to benefit from, and seize the opportunites to learn Arabic from one profoundly knowledgeable in the sciences of Arabic and Islaam (and the faDl is from Allaah).

His many Arabic-language resources are unique, aimed at non-native speakers and Arabs too.

We are in need of instilling confidence back into our learning after having been taught Arabic via poorly written books, books with grammar errors and by unqualified teachers who do a great injustice to the Arabic language in their curriculums and teaching methods.

Like our other Scholars of Arabic - past and present - this Shaykh's practice is to teach the knowledge step-by step, starting with the foundations, starting with what is easy, then moving gradually to the details. His aim is to connect us to the Qur'aan, Sunnah and understanding of the Sahaabah.

By the depth and precision of the teachings of our Scholars, - we learners can hope to obtain the correct understanding of the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of Allaah's Messenger - sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam. By that, we hope to have honoured the Book of Allaah by believing in it as it demands, acting on it as it necessitates and defending it as it obligates.

Assalaamu ‘alaikum Brothers and Sisters,

After completing the above-named books - which are excellent – as mentioned by ‘akramu l-lughaat’, then who amongst you is ready and eager for studying the Arabic language through the noble Prophetic narrations?

Our Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahim – حفظه الله - has already paved the way for us – the students and teachers - by explaining the lexical and grammatical content of many authentic ahaadiith which he has gathered and compiled in his ahaadiith books. These books have been published by different publishers world-wide. Some of the re-prints are fresh off the press.

I myself have studied some of these ahaadiith books and found each one to be excellent from several angles. Amongst the benefits, they serve to polish our skills and strengthen our knowledge gained from the Madinah Books.

They also advance us further into the Gardens of the language of the Qur’aan with new principles and details we have not covered before.

Please visit the following two threads which mention new titles and some of the beautiful content of just two of these hadith books:

1) Regarding the hadith book named:

نصوصٌ مِن الحديثِ النبويِّ الشريفِ:

جمعَها وشرحَها:

الدكتورُ ف. عبدُ الرحيمِ

Regarding the hadith book named:

Publisher’s Note

[After the Khutbatu l-Haajah]

“ It is a source of great pride and pleasure to be able to present to our readers all over the world this latest work of the great Arabic scholar, Dr. V. Abdur Rahim, titled:

“Both These Lights Emanate From The Same Niche”

This is a classical Arabic text dealing with the siirah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم which the author has treated with extensive lexical and grammatical annotation to help readers fully comprehend the text.

This and his other books based on annotated Qur’aanic and hadiith texts, reflect the author’s conviction that the best way to teach Arabic grammar, is to expose the students to living texts of the language.

He likens this methodology of teaching the language, to a conducted tour of an ancient, historical site .....”

---------------------------

Preface

[by Dr. V. Abdur Rahim]

[After the Khutbatu l-Haajah]

“ Like my book ‘From Esfahan To Madinah’ , this book also presents an annotated classical Arabic text.

The passage I have chosen to annotate in this book, is from the famous biography of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم known as Siirat ibn Hishaam, and the passage deals with the emigration of a group of the early Muslims to Abyssinia to escape the persecution of the Makkans.

Like its predecessor, this book is also meant for those who have completed the Madinah Arabic Programme, - i.e. the three parts of Duruus al-Lughah al-‘Arabiyyah [by the author], or have attained proficiency in Arabic equivalent to it.

As my aim in such works is to bring the reader closer to the Glorious Qur’aan, and to teach him as many Qur’aanic words and grammatical patterns as possible, I have given in this book also copious quotations from the Qur’aan.

In order to benefit from these materials to the utmost, the reader is advised to read the aayaat in full and in their context using a good translation of the Qur’aan like ‘A Word For Word Meaning of the Qur’an ’ by Dr. M. Mohar Ali rahimahullaah which has copious lexical and grammatical notes.

In conclusion, I thank Allah subhaanahu wa ta’aalaa for helping me to write this book, and sincerely pray for His help to serve the language of His Glorious Book better. ”

Default Madinah Arabic Reader (Excellent For Learning/Revising Knowledge)

السلام عليكم

:

MADINAH ARABIC READER

EIGHT PART COURSE FOR THE LEARNING OF ARABIC

AS TAUGHT AT
THE ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY, MADINAH

By

Dr. V. Abdur Rahim

(Arabic-English)

-----------------------------

Brothers and Sisters – have you considered revising your knowledge of the 3 volume Madinah Books via the above “Madinah Arabic Reader” 8 part-series?

The above series is excellent revision material.

The Madinah Arabic Reader series is printed in full-colour. The written material is also presented in a more simplified style, and set against richly-colourful illustrations, catchy headings and a fun and vibrant format. Our Shaykh’s generous use of colours and amusing illustrations, makes learning or revising Arabic, more lively.

I was also glad to read a book-review by a non-Muslim studying Arabic via the Madinah Reader series. The man described the books as : “fantastic”.

The story behind the creation of the “Madinah Arabic Reader” Series is very inspiring. It serves as an example for every dedicated teacher, school, college and university who desires to learn Arabic through a Scholar and one distinguished in his field - such as the Shaykh (baarakallaahu fii-hi).

The story also illustrates how the Shaykh is ever-ready to make sacrifices in the path of facilitating learning the language of the Qur’aan, for non-natives - be they adults or children – in all parts of the world.

I quote the entire story, narrated by Dr. Kem Hussain of the Nur-Ul-Islam Academy in Florida, U.S.A.

Quote (from the “Introduction” in Book 1, of the Madinah Arabic Reader Series, published 2005 CE):

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

INTRODUCTION

“Full-time Islamic Schools are a relatively new phenomenon in the United States. However, the growth of such schools has been rapid and, Alhamdulillah, several hundred such schools now exist and the number is expected to mushroom further in the coming years.

In the United States, Islamic Schools admit students as young as 3 years of age (Pre-Kindergarten) and, in the ensuing years, these students progress through Kindergarten, 1st Grade and all the way through 12th grade, at which time Insha Allah they should be ready to enter college.

Islamic schools curricula comprise secular subjects, which are generally the same as those mandated by the County or the State for public schools. In addition, Islamic schools tutor religious subjects such as Arabic, Islamic Studies and Qur’an. The standards to which students are tutored and tested in secular subjects, on a grade-by-grade basis, are well documented so that administrators, teachers and students know, at the outset, what is expected in terms of performance from each party. Equally important, parents are aware of such expectations. No similar standards exist for the religious component of Islamic schools’ curricula.

The Board of Directors of the Nur-Ul-Islam Academy, a fully-accredited Islamic school (Pre-K through 12th grade) located in the Fort Lauderdale area of Florida, felt that the absence of well documented standards was not conductive to proper administration, teaching or learning.

As a first step to compensate for this shortcoming, the Board felt that there was an urgent need to structure and publish a series of textbooks that would fit well into the structure and overall curricula of the Nur-Ul-Islam Academy, and that may serve the needs of other schools in North America and elsewhere.

This led the Academy’s Board of Directors to invite Professor Abdur Rahim, Director of the Translation Center of King Fahd Qur’an Printing Complex and former Professor of Arabic at the Islamic University of Madinah, Saudi Arabia, to visit the Academy and to produce a series of textbooks that would enable students to read, write and speak Arabic with some degree of proficiency by the 8th Grade.

Professor Abdur Rahim was both gracious and generous in his response and traveled without delay to the Academy’s campus to undertake the exercise. His efforts led to this eight-volume series catering for students from Kindergarten through 8th Grade.

Professor Abdur Rahim’s eight-volume texts, allow the language to be acquired in the classical structural form. The books attempt to teach language skills through applied grammar. Each lesson consists of a conversation based on certain language patterns. Various types of exercises help the student to understand each of the patterns occurring in the lesson, and to master them. The vocabulary represents classical Qur’anic words and expressions, along with words used in modern Arabic.

The series of books are currently being utilized at the Academy to prepare students for the University of London (U.K.) GCE Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations, via Edexcel International.

The Board of Directors, faculty, students and parents of the Nur-Ul-Islam Academy are very much indebted to Professor Abdur Rahim for his generosity and devotion to our cause, and we pray that Allah rewards him in abundance.

May Allah bless all who seek knowledge. Jazak Allah Khairan.

As-salaam 'alaikum,
I saw these books a while ago and have been thinking about using them to teach my two kids. I've already used The Madinah book to teach the older one and we've completed book 1, the problem I face is he understands the lessons when taught very well but when I ask him some questions much later he dabbles. The confusing part is he can tell you which page and chapter a particular topic is and when asked with a book to discuss a particular thing (say Numbers 3 -10 and how they work) he can explain the concepts quite well.
Confused really.
Anyway, I think I'll try this set for them.
