bismiAllaah

assalamu alayka akh Shaheed;

As you know all good comes from Allaah, and all the praises solely belong to him only; may he be Glorified, and Exalted.

Your question shows that you are listening carefuly to the wonderful instructor in the videos; ma sha Allaah.

In Arabic there are three parts of speech. One of the parts of speech is called a particle; (حَرْفٌ). In the category of particle, there are prepositions (مَجْرُوْرٌ). For example, (فِي البيتِ) means in the house. 'In' is the preposition, and the house is the noun whichh follows it; thus, this noun becomes (مَجْرُوْرٌ). (مَجْرُوْرٌ) means a noun that is in the genitive case, the preposition pulls down the noun, and gives it a kas'ra. As a result, we call in (حرف جر) (جَرٌ وَ مَجْرُوْرٌ), and in the house; (اسم مجرور); hnce, this phrase is shortened to (جر و مجرور) rather than saying the whole thing.

Furthermore, any word(s) that does not form a complete sentence is just a phrase (شِبُهُ الجُمْلَة). For example, 'to the house; إلي البيت is a phrase. It is not a complete sentence because it does not have a subject, and a predicate.

Finally, I hope the above brief information clarifies your reasonable question. May Allaahu ta'ala reward: Brother Fuad Abdu ArRaheem, Brother Asif Mehrali, and the institute of the language of the Glorious Qur'an. May Allaahu ta'ala allow you to master the: elequent, blessed, and honoured langauge of the Glorious Qur'an, and send many peace and blessings unto our beloved Prophet Muhammad; baraka Allaahu feek.

Allaah knows best

assalam aleikum,

not to formulate an opinion on what you know, but if you are in book 3, and don't know this. you are destroying your understanding.

this series, was designed as stepping from one lesson to another. you can't approach it laterally.

wa Allah ya'lam

wa aleikum assalam wa rahmat Allah

bismiAllaah

wa alayka assalam;

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Your opinion is very much respected. As long as it does not anger Allaahu ta'ala I guess we are okay with it. Sometimes students forget certain concepts and they ask questions on the forums; hence, their understanding of that concept comes back. We are only called (إِنْسَاْن) mankind because of our forgetfullness. (إِنْسَاْن) comes from the verb (نَسِيَ) to forget; therefore, humbley asking questions on this forum is one of the beneficial ways of retaining the knowledge from the blessed Madinah books; alhamdu liAllaah. I hope you understand. May Allaahu ta'la reward you with many good in both lives; baraka Allaahu feek.

Assalaamu ‘alaikum Brother Shahid M ali,

شِبْهُ جُمْلَةٍ :

This is defined by our Shaykh in Book 3, Key to L. 11 (footnote):

“The expression shibhu jumlah literally means,

‘ that which resembles a sentence ’.

-----------------------

quote from Key to L. 11 (phrase from Key to L. 21 * ): ----

شِبْهُ جُمْلَةٍ :
is one of the following two things :

1. – a prepositional phrase (الْْجَارُّ وَالْمَجْرُورُ) * like:

فِي الْبَيْتِ،
عَلَى الْمَكْتَبِ،
كَالْمَاءِ.

2. – a zarf الظَّرْفُ like :

الْيَوْمَ،
غَداً،
تَحْتَ،
فَوْقَ،
عِنْدَ.

[Footnote]: Words like تَحْتَ under’, فَوْقَ above’, عِنْدَ with', - are not prepositions in Arabic.

Prepositions like ،فِي، عَلَى، إِلَى، مِنْ، بـِ، كـَ

are particles [Huruuf ].

But words like : تَحْتَ، فَوْقَ، عِنْدَ,

are nouns [asmaa' ] which are declinable (i.e. change their endings).

E.g. :

هذا مِنْ عِنْدِ اللهِ.
مِنْ فَوْقِهِ،
مِنْ تَحْتِهِ.

And a majruur noun following one of these words is a mudaaf ilayhi. e.g.,

تَحْتَ الْمَاءِ

‘under the water’.

End quote-----------

This knowledge is summarised in our Shaykh’s Arabic-English Dictionary :

Quote ---------------

شِبْهُ جُمْلَةٍ:

a phrase consisting of a jaarr and its majruur ,

or a zarf and its mudaaf ilayhi,

e.g.

فِي الْمَسْجِدِ
مَعَ الإِمَامِ

End quote -------------Ref, pg 41 :

A Glossary of Words Used In :

دُرُوسُ اللُّغَةِ الْعَرَبِيَّةِ لغيرِ النَّاطِقِينَ بِهَا

Arabic-English Dictionary

By Dr. V. Abdur Rahim

----------------------

Hope this helps you.

Wassalaam
