عندما for present/past?

assalamu allaikum,

book 2 dars 29
أ شممت الرائحة الكريهة عندما فتحت الباب
why is in this sentence 3indama used and not lama. in the key you can read that 3indama is used with present and lama is used with past. but this sentence above is in the past and although 3indama is used
